A professional cleaning removes the hardened plaque that brushing at home cannot reach. Paired with a checkup, it is the single most effective way to avoid the more involved treatments described elsewhere on this site.
What a visit includes
- Examination of teeth, gums and existing fillings
- X-rays where needed
- Scaling to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line
- Polishing
- A discussion of anything we found and what, if anything, to do about it
How often should you come in?
Every six months suits most adults. If you have gum disease, smoke, or have a history of frequent decay, we may suggest coming more often. Patients who have had implants or crowns benefit from keeping to a regular schedule.
Signs you should not wait
Bleeding when you brush, persistent bad breath, gums that have receded, or teeth that feel loose are all reasons to be seen sooner. Gum disease is largely reversible when caught early and much harder to treat once bone has been lost. If you are in pain now, see our emergency dental page.
Common questions
Is a cleaning covered by insurance?
Preventive cleanings are among the most commonly covered treatments, and many plans cover two per year in full. We offer direct billing with most major insurers.
Does a cleaning hurt?
Most patients find it uncomfortable at worst. If your gums are inflamed or you have sensitive teeth, tell us and we will adjust our approach.
I have not been to a dentist in years. Is that a problem?
It is common and not a reason to stay away. We will start with an examination, explain what we find without judgment, and agree on a plan with you.
