A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth entirely, restoring its shape and letting you chew on it normally again. Crowns are used when a tooth is too broken down or too heavily filled for another filling to hold.

When a crown is recommended

Materials

Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold alloys. Porcelain is usually chosen for teeth that show; metal-based crowns are strong and often preferred at the back where biting forces are highest. We will explain the trade-offs in durability and appearance for your particular tooth.

The procedure

The tooth is prepared and an impression taken. A temporary crown protects it while the permanent one is made. At the second visit the permanent crown is checked for fit and bite, then cemented in place. Local anesthetic is used, and most patients are comfortable throughout.

Common questions

How long does a crown last?

Many crowns last a decade or more. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, grinding habits and the health of the tooth underneath.

Will the crown match my other teeth?

Porcelain crowns are shade-matched to your neighboring teeth. We check the match in natural light before cementing anything permanently.

Does insurance cover crowns?

Crowns are usually treated as a restorative rather than cosmetic procedure, so many plans contribute. See our insurance plans page.
