A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post that bonds with the jawbone. Once it has healed, a custom crown is attached on top. The result looks and functions like a natural tooth, and unlike a bridge it does not rely on filing down the healthy teeth on either side.
Who implants are for
Implants are usually considered when a tooth has been lost to decay, injury or gum disease, or when a denture or bridge has become uncomfortable. Good candidates generally have healthy gums and enough bone to support the post. Where bone has been lost, a graft may be recommended first. Dr. Azizzadeh will review your X-rays and medical history to determine whether an implant is the right option for you.
What the process involves
- Consultation and imaging. We examine the site, take X-rays and discuss options.
- Placing the post. A minor procedure under local anesthetic.
- Healing. The bone integrates with the post over several months.
- The crown. A custom crown is made to match your surrounding teeth and fitted.
Timelines vary from patient to patient; we will give you a realistic schedule at your consultation.
Caring for an implant
An implant is brushed and flossed like a natural tooth and does not decay. The gum and bone around it still need care, so regular cleanings and checkups matter as much as ever.
Common questions
Are dental implants covered by insurance?
Coverage varies widely by plan. We accept almost every insurance plan and offer direct billing — see our insurance page or call (718) 740-7700 and we will check your benefits for you.
Is placing an implant painful?
The procedure is done under local anesthetic and most patients report less discomfort than they expected. Mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long do implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, implants are designed to be a long-term restoration. The crown on top may need replacing after many years of normal wear.
