If you are in pain, have broken a tooth, or have swelling in your face or gums, call us at (718) 740-7700. We keep time aside for urgent cases and will get you seen as quickly as we can.
What counts as a dental emergency
- Severe or worsening toothache
- A knocked-out tooth
- A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
- Swelling in the gum, face or jaw
- Bleeding that does not stop
- A lost filling or crown that leaves a sharp or painful edge
- An abscess
Facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, or an injury involving the jaw, is a medical emergency — go to an emergency room or call 911 rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
What to do before you get here
- Knocked-out tooth: handle it by the crown, not the root. If you can, place it back in the socket; otherwise keep it in milk and come in immediately. Time matters a great deal.
- Toothache: rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Do not place aspirin against the gum.
- Broken tooth: rinse your mouth, save any fragments, and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to limit swelling.
- Lost filling or crown: keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side.
When you arrive
We will get you out of pain first, then explain what caused the problem and the options for fixing it properly — which may be a filling, a crown, root canal therapy or, occasionally, an extraction.
Common questions
Do I need to be an existing patient?
No. We see new patients for emergencies.
What if it is outside your opening hours?
Call (718) 740-7700 and follow the instructions on the message. For anything involving difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a suspected broken jaw, go straight to an emergency room.
Will insurance cover emergency treatment?
Most plans cover the examination and the treatment that follows. We accept almost every plan and will check your benefits when you arrive.
