Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of porcelain bonded to the front of your teeth. They are one of the most direct ways to change the color, shape or alignment of the teeth that show when you smile, often in only two visits.
What veneers can address
- Teeth that stay discolored after whitening
- Chips, cracks and worn edges
- Small gaps between front teeth
- Teeth that are uneven in shape or slightly out of line
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment. If a tooth is decayed, or a bite problem is causing the wear, that is treated first — sometimes with a crown rather than a veneer.
What to expect
At your first visit we discuss the result you are looking for and examine whether veneers suit your teeth. A very thin layer of enamel is then prepared, an impression is taken, and your veneers are made to match the shade and shape agreed with you. At the second visit they are checked for fit and bonded in place.
Because enamel is reshaped, veneers are considered a permanent commitment. We will walk you through the alternatives before you decide.
Looking after veneers
Brush and floss as normal. Porcelain resists staining well, but the natural tooth and gum around it still need routine care. Avoid using your front teeth to bite very hard objects, and mention any nighttime grinding — a guard may be recommended.
Common questions
How many visits do veneers take?
Most cases are completed in two visits, plus the initial consultation.
Do veneers stain?
Porcelain is highly stain-resistant, considerably more so than natural enamel or bonding material. Coffee, tea and tobacco can still affect the surrounding natural teeth over time.
Are veneers covered by insurance?
Purely cosmetic work is usually not covered. Where a veneer restores a damaged tooth, some plans contribute. Call (718) 740-7700 and we will check your specific plan.
